FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 17, 2012

The Seattle Humane Society supports today’s sentencing of six months in jail for Ricky Lee Knowles of Orting, Wash., who was convicted of animal cruelty for beating and strangling a neighbor’s Golden Retriever.

The Seattle Humane Society urged the maximum sentence for Knowles, who used treats to lure the dog Kona into his garage, and then nearly killed him with a hatchet.

“Animal cruelty is a horrible crime and often a precursor to other acts of violence,” said Seattle Humane CEO David Loewe. “It is important that anyone guilty of harming or injuring animals be held fully accountable for their actions.”

Knowles will serve six months on electronic home monitoring following his release from jail. He was also ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution and is prohibited from owning or residing with any animals.
